Summer Houseboating - My Building Project

(Photo from Bravadayachts.com)

If you have been with
Purple Chocolat Home
for very long you know we love
boating at Lake Powell
in the summer.
We have had two houseboats and the one that
we call our "new" houseboat is now twelve years old and
we are now ready to retire that boat and are in the process
of building a new boat like the one above.  Many of the
boat manufacturers have gone out of business with the
changes in the economy but
Bravada  Yachts
which is based out
of Phoenix are still building beautiful houseboats.

Since we can easily fly in to Phoenix we
were able to visit about once a month to check on the
building process.  The hull starts with a huge piece
of aluminum which is then bent up to create the bottom
and sides of the boat.

Then floors and walls are framed in similar
to home construction.

With side walls added, it quickly starts to look
like a houseboat. Plumbing, electrical, heating and cooling
are next followed by cabinets, baths and kitchens.

Up to eight or so boats are under construction at once
and as you look back through the living room of ours
you can see other boats along the line.

The design process is fascinating as most buyers
are from out of town.  The designer Tracey (the co-owner with her
husband Jim)
sent a questionaire and some pictures to define colors and
styles and then had some options laid out to look at.
The whole process took an afternoon as we first
chose color and style, then went through fabrics, lighting
options, carpet, floors, tile, etc.  Hubby had spent quite
some time designing the basic floor plan to maximize
the number of staterooms but small changes could
be made while we were there designing the interior.

It was nice to spend a night in Phoenix and be able
to sleep on some of the picks and return, review
and change a few things.

We started the process in January and the boat was
to be in the water June 1st.  As with most building
projects, things were running a little late, and the boat
was to be in the water last weekend.

This was the boat when I saw it last weekend as we
were putting up mirrors and filling kitchen cupboards.
There was still plenty of work to be done and she wasn't
in the water yet.

Outdoor furniture had been delivered and the housboat
employees were opening the boxes and getting
the furniture set up.  (I was thrilled not to have to do that!)

The temperature was about 104 and there was
no air conditioning inside, so hanging mirrors in
the staterooms was sweltering.  It isn't
finished yet as hubby and youngest son are
down in Page, Arizona working again
this weekend, but here is a sneak peek of the
salon.

As you can imagine, cooking and eating is a big part
of our boating experience and there is a great indoor
kitchen (a huge upgrade from our first houseboat where
we used a marine fridge and a camper sized stove)

And also a wonderful outdoor kitchen on the 2nd level.

These are just a few tempting shots.  I will follow up
with another post when the project is finished.

I hope that will be quickly as we have a couple's trip
planned for her maiden voyage in a little over a week.

I will be sharing this with

From Ugly Duckling to Beautiful Swan - A Pillow Makeover

Time for a little sprucing up around Purple Chocolat Home.

We did a little redecorating in the living room and these
large leather double wide chairs needed something.

I had some ugly striped pillows from the last model
home I decorated and decided to recover them.

I found this beautiful flocked damask on a burlap
type weave that I thought would be beautiful

Here is a before shot.  I had never used these pillow,
they just came with a couch we used and I was
actually getting ready to ship them off to a thrift
store.

Recovering pillows is one of the easiest redecorating
projects.  If you haven't given it a try, you should.

I just cut open the fabric and then used it as a pattern
for the new fabric.  With the damask pattern, I had to
be careful to center the design.  I was going to try and
reuse the fringe, but it just fell apart when I dismantled
the pillow so I bought new instead.

After the two sides of the pillow were cut out, I sewed
the fringe on the right side of the pillow front.

Next I placed the two pieces right sides together, being sure not
to get the end of the fringe caught in the seam, I sewed
the two sides together with the fringe.

Trim the corners and turn right side out.
Stitch the opening closed and fluff the fringe.

To tuft the pillow you will need an upholstery needle.
You can buy these at almost any fabric store.  This one
is about 8 to 10 inches long.  This way the needle goes
all the way through the thickness of the pillow.  I used
the more expensive jeweled button for only one side
and this faux leather button for the opposite side.
I also used heavy duty upholstery thread and tied
each one off separately for extra security.

Throw on another purchased pillow and
pull up the ottoman and the project is done.

There are two of these chairs so I made two of
the pillows and saved a fortune.

Purple Chocolat Home's Eery Vintage Buffet and Giveaway

Welcome to Dracula's parlor.

Although Beaulah and I tend toward
non-spooky decor for Halloween
we decided to put together this more
EERY
vignette on the buffet chest in the living room.

I knew I wanted some fun word blocks to
set the tone, so my granddaughter and I
had a craft night and made these
EERY
wood blocks.

I was looking for some antique handwriting for the
background of the block.
I found this on Graphics Fairy.  It is actually from
an autograph book circa 1857.  I downloaded
it to my computer.

Then I needed some fun fonts and while on
Pinterest I saw this

The font I chose was
Aquiline.

I imported the handwritten page into
Photoscape, then placed the letter on
each page while in Photoscape (a free program
that is user friendly that you can find here),
then just printed it out in a 5x7 on copy paper.

A thin coat of Mod Podge sticks the paper to
the wood block.  Let dry then apply another
thin coating.  Sand the edges if desired.

The word blocks are the perfect focal point
for our buffet.

Beaulah laughed and laughed when
she saw this photo of my husband and me.
She said our noses are worse than hers!

I am the one on the left.  We always, always, always
dress up for handing out the candy.

This antique photo plays well with the
vintage look of the Halloween decor.

By the magic of a hologram, when you
turn the picture just a little, the baby
becomes spooky with white eyes and fangs.

The kiddies can't keep their hands off this piece.

Yes, you might have guessed it, we have more
than one hand around the house.  Here it
is presented under glass.

A black sparkly pumpkin is under glass also.

And even a crow with beady black eyes.

We tried another decoupage project this
year too.  This eery candlestick was
featured in Martha Stewart's Halloween 2010.

I just cut mine out of copy paper that I
sent through the copier without anything
to copy so that I had a thin black paper.
Again, apply it with a thin layer of
Mod Podge, then let dry and top with
another thin coat.

My vintage Victorian witch's boot and
a fringed shawl help fill out the vignette.

The jeweled  Victorian style cake stands are
perfect for showcasing Dracula's treasures.

Imagine yourself here after dark with the
black candles lit.

Beaulah pushed my photo out of the way
and made room for herself - she's not too spooky.

She doesn't want you to miss out on her
giveaway which ends Wednesday, October 19th
at midnight.

Beaulah had to doll it up to fit with the post)

She is giving away a Glitterville Stacking
Halloween Cake Platter.  Oooh, this is going
to look sooooooooo good in someone's home.

Purple Chocolat Halloween Mantel

Beaulah and I have been flying
this week to get Purple Chocolat Home
decorated.

Today we are showing you the mantle.

Decor around here tends toward
friendly witches and we love the Halloween
colors, but we REALLY love purple
and black for Halloween colors.

This year the Halloween Mantel has witches'
shoes for a theme.

Of course, our taste in witches' shoes is going to
run towards purple!  Love this little hanging witch,
she must have gotten splinched when she used
her flue powder.

"IF THE SHOE FITS"
and I think it does!

When you enter this Halloween home,
just toss your witch hat and make yourself
at home, especially if it is a purple feathered one.

Black and purple sparkle
is everywhere.

Love the fur trim on this one and the
curled toe.

(Yes, you can find all kinds of Halloween
decor in purple and black these days.)

Someone must have left their
 spells and potions books
on the hearth.

Even purple sparkly spiders  can give
you the creeps.

(Hope they don't make friends with any real ones!)

Beaulah, I think it is just perfect,!
Let's fly on to another decorating project.

Oh, one last thing, Beaulah wanted to
point out that her own shoes
are the inspiration for today's mantel.

We are also having a giveaway of a
Glitterville Halloween Stacked Cake Platter

We will walk our shoes on over
