Celebrating Three Kings Day With A Fiesta

Today's table has been set for a
meal I am having for friends
this week.

Since Three King's Day is January 6th
and is celebrated in Mexico, I decided we
would have Mexican food and the
table would follow this festive theme.

The tableware is all fun items I have picked
up in Cabo from the plates and the bowls
to the glassware.  I always, always, always
bring a hard side carry on so that I can bring
back dishes and glassware if I fall in love.

These bright yellow and blue plates
caught my eye.  I love the hand painted
detail and the brilliant color.  I am always
drawn to square plates and this is a fun way
to mix the two.

I brought back the pewter bowls to use as
small serving bowls but they top the plates
perfectly.

Such great handles on these small bowls.

These fun straw placemats remind me of
the palapas you see all over Mexico.

I tried both silver and black flatware
and decided I liked the richness of
the black the best.  If in doubt, try both
out and choose which one you like best.

The placemats give the table a fun
casual feel.

The short deep cobalt glasses
are paired with the tall cobalt
rimmed glasses.  We will be having
non-alcoholic lava flows to drink
but I always like to serve ice water
in addition.  The short glasses are our
everyday glasses.

The centerpiece has fun theme related
candles.  The pewter one came from Cabo also.

I love how the light shines through
the glass on these tone on tone hurricanes.

These little crowns show off the candle
light in a fun and different way.

We are almost ready for our meal.
I am using the pewter bowls as individual
chip bowls.  I think that is a fun touch.

I always like to serve appetizers
when I entertain.  It makes for
fun conversation (and I just love appetizer
type foods!)

For the first time since I can remember we haven't
gotten together as siblings for a Christmas party.
(My parents have both been gone for over 15 years now.)

The day before Christmas Eve my husband and
I were at the mall and we ran into my brother and
his wife and my sister and her family.  My brother
commented on how he thought the Mexican tradition
of Three King's Day was such a fun way to extend
Christmas a little and that we ought to do it too.

I laughed and said, "Yes, that way we can have a
family party after Christmas as before Christmas
was just too busy this year."  So his comment
was my inspiration for this fun Mexican fiesta.
(And our weather has been so warm
you could almost imagine you are in Cabo!)

I will be posting with

Chocolat - French for Chocolate. I adored chocolate from a young age when I had to sneak in the cupboard to find where my mother had hidden the Nestle's Chocolate Chips. Having read about the famous chocolat shoppes in Paris, when I finally got there I was determined to try a chocolate from every Paris shoppe. I invite you to share my adventures in creating, in travel, and in life.

  2. I LOVE this table, it is fun but elegant too!!! My kind of table! I am glad you will be able to get together with your siblings. This year we realized how our family is SHRINKING and it is so sad to me. Happy new year, Jacqueline!!! XO, Pinky

  3. How fun!! We celebrate Three Kings Day or Los Tres Reyes Magos as they do in Puerto Rico since my husband is from there. The children will leave grass in a box under their beds to feed the camels, and the kings will, in return, leave gifts. It definitely extends the Christmas spirit a little longer! We will have traditional puerto rican food, though. Your table looks so festive and inviting!!

  5. I do hope you get together with your siblings, it is so important to keep those ties strong.
I love the table, great colors and textures! The little bowls are great!
We celebrate the Epiphany in our church as the end of the Cmas season, Little Christmas. We never take the decorations down till then!
    Hope your celebration is wonderful!

  6. A beautiful table for King's Day, the 6th. and after we start to take the decor down too. Most Latins celebrate King's Day, we do here too. I bring the three Kings and set a table. Spaniard's are going to receive presents and toys the 6th. of January on King's Day, not like in America, we receive gifts on C'mas Eve, or Day. Your dishes are gorgeous, I love the style and paired with the beautiful crowns, makes for a wonderful table and your guest are going to have a real Fiesta! Happy New Year Jackeline!

  10. Hi, Jacqueline! Our Cuban family will also be celebrating the arrival of the "Reyes Magos." Even though my family came from Cuba in the 1960s when I was a child, my parents always kept the tradition alive. We're doing cookies/desserts and Cuban hot chocolate for the children in the family. I was really happy to see your beautiful post. All the pieces on your table are gorgeous (thanks for the tip on how to bring them back!). I'm having fun scheming on my table theme, and I'd been thinking about crowns...yours are perfect!! Felicidades (wishes of happiness)! ~Zuni

  14. I love the blue, yellow, and white combo...my favorite! I want to see you add some hot pink + to it at some point...you know...the San Antonio Mexican colors. These plates are fantastic! I would have carried them back, too. I'm so glad that you had the time with your family. We've been making the effort to spend time with our siblings, too. It's just so very important. Thanks for inviting us for a peak. Cherry Kay

  17. Good thing you packed that hard-sided suitcase to bring these beauties back stateside!!! They're gorgeous! They remind me of the azulejos so popular in Spain & Portugal which also happen to be abundant on our Country Club Plaza in Kansas City, Mo., which is patterned after an area in Seville, Spain. The colors and pattern are brilliant! Great table celebrating el dia de los tres reyes!

  28. I know how hard it is to keep the family together after the parents are gone - especially if the family is scattered. Lovely table!

  29. Wow I love your brightly colored dinnerware and the peweter bowls too! They set on the square plates just perfectly! Cute idea with the chips! I guess it's part of life thse days, all the families are shrinking and the get togethers become harder and harder. Once my Mom is gone I know we won't get together as much as we have in the past. The Three King's Day is new to me- but I'm glad to be learning about it!

  38. I really like the individual chip bowls~fun! This looks like a good reason to throw another party:)Your table looks so festive! I was just in my favorite Mexican bakery yesterday with my grandson and they had an amazing ring of Mexican sweet bread(pan dulce) just for the Three Kings' Day celebration. It had three little plastic babies baked into it, which I think signified prosperity if you had one in your serving:) I am definitely going to order one next year. Adios, amiga!

  39. Dear Jacqueline, your tablescape is just lovely! Nothing better than festive dishes to celebrate such a great day like Dia de Reyes with family and friends. Not only is a Mexican tradition but around Ibero-America we celebrate it jut like this, wih a beautiful table, family friends and little gifts here and there! It's like a mini Christmas. They food may be different but the feeling is the same! Feliz Dia de Reyes amiga! and many blessings!
