Fabulous Lake Powell

Lake Powell is one of our family's summer vacation spots.
We have been boating here for 20 years.

For those of you who haven't heard of Lake Powell, it is a
reservoir in Utah and Arizona, mostly Utah that runs 150 miles
from top to bottom.  It is a boater's paradise.
There are houseboats, speedboats, tourboats and even kayaks
enjoying every mile.

Sheer cliffs and rock formations made of red sandstone
next to gorgeous blue-green water make for incredible
views.
We spent the last week there with extended family.
The nights are gorgeous.  We caught this beautiful sunset.
Days are filled with boating, skiing, wake surfing, wake boarding
and the best of all "water rocket wars".
Where the focus is to board the other team's water rocket
and tip them over.

This year's new fun activity is wake surfing.  The object is to catch
the wave and then toss the rope back into the boat and hold
the curve of the wave until you fall.  It is fun and easy to try
and the fall is very gentle.  It looks scary being so close to the back
of the boat, but the propeller is back up under the boat.
I can even do it!
Like every vacation we take, food is a central part.
This trip was to celebrate my sister-in-law Kim's 50th birthday.
My other sister-in-law, Mona, made these red velvet cupcakes for
the birthday celebration.  I will follow with a post on an
award winning red velvet cake.  Red velvet cake has been
a family tradition in my husband's family.  They had a cook-off
to see who made the best red velvet cake.  I was an un-biased
judge (since I wasn't a blood relative) and my husband's brother, Greg
won and now it is one of our family favorites.
Lunches were fabulous.
We even had brunch
of French Toast with fresh fruit and a
buttermilk syrup.  I will give you the recipe for
the buttermilk syrup in a later post.

We even had  a delicious Oreo Cookie Ice Cream Torte.
We eat in style.
Everyone has a day of meals so we get to enjoy
everyone's talents in the culinary department.

I made a special copy of our family recipe book just for Lake
Powell so I always have recipes available.

Now that the kids have mostly grown up, I can lay back and relax.

Hope you are having a wonderful summer too.
I will be posting this with The Tablescaper on Summer Sundays.

Chocolat - French for Chocolate. I adored chocolate from a young age when I had to sneak in the cupboard to find where my mother had hidden the Nestle's Chocolate Chips. Having read about the famous chocolat shoppes in Paris, when I finally got there I was determined to try a chocolate from every Paris shoppe. I invite you to share my adventures in creating, in travel, and in life.

  6. What a fun summer vacation place! Breathtaking views! The kids look like they have so much fun but I have to say no to the water games. I am such a chicken when it comes to being in the water. The food alone is to die for. You don't need to go on a cruise if you can be here..Christine

  10. I haven't been to Lake Powell, but hear it's wonderful. I really enjoyed your photos.

You gave me a great idea. I should make a copy of my recipe collection, instead of lugging it back and forth.

Thanks so much for being a part of "SUMMER SUNDAYS"!
