Pig's Trough For A Crowd

Having a

Summer BBQ
Family Reunion
Block Party
Birthday Party?

Here's the treat for you.
We like to call this banana split the Pig's Trough.
It has become a family and neighborhood favorite.

This Pig's Trough fed 50 people this week .

Start with a plastic rain gutter that you can buy for about
$7 at your Home Depot store.  It runs about 10 feet long.
Buy the two end caps too. Wash and dry all parts.

This Trough was created outside with a plastic table cloth,
but we have been known to let piggies in the house.
It is a little messier, but they are soooo cute!

First I layer in cookies to add a surprise crunch at the
bottom of the trough.  Piggies love crunchy things.
Next, cut bananas in half and layer those down the
trough.
I like to buy the rectangular boxes of ice cream so that you
can open the boxes quickly and cut slabs of ice cream.
This helps me put the trough together quickly because
both little piggies and big piggies
don't like their ice cream
to be soup.
Continue layering ice cream.  We used 7 containers of ice cream
for this trough, chocolate marshmallow, fudge ripple, peanut
butter chocolate, and vanilla.
Now comes the sauces.  We drizzled on raspberry sauce, caramel
sauce, chocolate sauce and chocolate hard shell (loved this one).
Finish it off with whipped cream and cherries.  You can add
nuts too.  I often do, but this was for teenage piggies and
you know how they can be.
We find it best to make the traditional pig sounds to call
everyone to the trough.

Have spoons ready and stand back if you don't want to get
stampeded.

Don't hesitate if you want some because it doesn't last long.

Pig's Trough

1 plastic trough and 2 end caps (9-10 feet long)
7-8 cartons of ice cream
1 large package of chocolate chip cookies (or other flavor)
2 bunches of bananas
squeeze bottles of assorted toppings
1-2 large cans of whipped cream
cherries
nuts (optional)

I used the large package of cookie, the bunches of bananas
and the whipped cream all from Costco.

Chocolat - French for Chocolate. I adored chocolate from a young age when I had to sneak in the cupboard to find where my mother had hidden the Nestle's Chocolate Chips. Having read about the famous chocolat shoppes in Paris, when I finally got there I was determined to try a chocolate from every Paris shoppe. I invite you to share my adventures in creating, in travel, and in life.

  29. When I was young there was a place called Jahns that had a sundae called the Kitchen sink.
I think it fed 30 or more!
Gutters are very versatile. I have used them as planters along a wall.
I love this use. Not for the germaphobic though!

  30. Jacqueline, Read your comment about making several ice cream dishes from the Ice Cream social and weight...I know what you mean. I have gained about 7 lbs since I started doing the online Tuesday tea parties! Gotta have something to eat (and photograph) with the tea, ya know! You are Joni's sister, aren't you? I love Joni's blog and also Tati's. What fun! Your blog is awesome too!

  31. What a fun idea!! I wonder, though, if some day on some television show they'll be offering a prize to the guy who can eat the whole thing himself!! (You know, like they do on the 4th of July at Coney Island---60+ hotdogs for one man!!)

If they think up a competition like the pig trough, I'll bet my son or husband would love to give it a try...they LOVE ice cream.

    Blessings,

  45. we do this at young life club! we have 50 or so high school students who come to a weekly outreach club during the school year. last year we had a "banana club" and started the night off with a race to see which team could finish a gutter sundae first. it was amazing. they lined up around 2 of these sundaes and dove in. they took them down in under 2 minutes.
